Differences between the four and six week courses

Our four-week courses consist of 20 lessons, while our six-week courses consist of 30 lessons.

The four-week courses are designed for students who want to concentrate on the core skills within a shorter period.

The six-week courses allow us to cover the subject in considerably greater depth and, in the garment-making courses, include the complete process of cutting, preparing and fitting the garment.

The main difference between the 4-Week and 6-Week Pattern Drafting Courses is the range of garments covered.

The four-week course consists of 20 lessons concentrating specifically on the two foundations of the programme: trousers and jackets.

The six-week course consists of 30 lessons and expands the programme to include waistcoats, overcoats and bodycoats, providing a much broader education in bespoke pattern drafting.

The main difference between the 4-Week and 6-Week Tailoring Techniques Courses is the inclusion of Pattern Drafting.

The four-week course consists of 20 lessons concentrating on the practical sewing, construction and finishing techniques used throughout bespoke tailoring.

The six-week course consists of 30 lessons and expands the programme to include pattern drafting, giving students an introduction to both the cutting and making sides of the bespoke tailoring
process.

The 4-Week Trouser Making Course concentrates on the construction of bespoke trousers.

Students work from a prepared pattern and focus on the traditional making techniques used throughout the garment.

The 6-Week Trouser Making Course takes the student through the complete process, including cutting, preparing a basted fitting, fitting the trousers and making the necessary alterations before completing the garment.

The 4-Week Waistcoat Making Course focuses on the practical skills required to make a traditionally constructed bespoke waistcoat. Students work from a prepared pattern, allowing the course to concentrate on construction, pockets, canvassing, lining, hand sewing and finishing.

The 6-Week course adds the basting and fitting stages, taking the student through the complete process from cloth to finished garment.

The 4-Week Jacket Making Course concentrates specifically on the construction and making of a bespoke jacket.

Students work from a prepared pattern and begin with the garment ready to progress into the making process.

The 6-Week Jacket Making Course covers the complete process, including cutting the garment, preparing a basted fitting, fitting the jacket on the wearer and making the necessary alterations before progressing through the full construction.

Ideal for students primarily interested in developing their making skills

6 weeks - 30 Lessons

Covers the complete bespoke jacket-making process
Includes preparing the jacket for a basted fitting
Includes fitting and alterations
Progresses from the fitting stage through the complete construction of the jacket
10 additional lessons allow greater depth and practice

The Art & Science of Fitting Gentlemen’s Garments is available as either a four-week or six-week course.

The six-week course provides a comprehensive study of fitting both jackets and trousers. Students learn how bespoke patterns are adapted to accommodate different body types, postures and figurations, and how these variations affect the balance and fit of a garment.

Throughout the course, students develop both the theoretical knowledge and practical judgement required to diagnose fitting problems. They are presented with examples of gentlemen wearing tailored garments and asked to identify the underlying fitting issues, determine their causes and explain the appropriate pattern alterations required to correct them.

The four-week course concentrates exclusively on the fitting of bespoke jackets, covering the same principles of balance, posture, figuration and pattern adjustment within a more focused programme.

It is now possible to take The Art & Science of Fitting Gentlemen’s Garments without first completing our Pattern Drafting course. However, we strongly recommend studying both subjects, as a thorough understanding of pattern construction greatly strengthens a tailor’s ability to diagnose and correct fitting problems. Students unable to attend the Pattern Drafting course in person may choose to study the subject through our online Pattern Drafting programme.
