We advise those who wish to excel in their profession not to rest satisfied with what they read, even in respect to foundation principles, but to test such arguments as are submitted to them in a practical manner. To advanced practitioners we would say that time spent in examining theories of cutting, the weighing of reasons for and against any particular system will not be lost: perceptions will become keener, ideas matured, confusion of mind will pass away, and each will be saved from the unsatisfying practice of vacillating from one system to another."
